On my second trip to Burundi in June 2010 I was surprised to see many children wandering around during school hours. When I asked my host why, I was told that their parents could not afford to purchase the required uniform and books. I determined then that we would find a way to provide for these children to give them hope and a future.
I took the top photo in the rice fields of Burundi. These children were smiling and playing despite their extreme poverty.
I am pleased to say that slightly more than a year after I took the photo above, we sponsored 23 children. We purchased school uniforms, shoes, books, and school supplies for each child. In January of this year we started feeding each child a nutritious lunch meal each day. Many of their families were only able to feed them one meal every two days. These children have hope and a future.
