Twenty-two of SHAPE’s sponsored children were part of our annual Christmas party for 2013. Each child received a gift bag, candy, soap, a soft drink, a meal, and a new set of clothes. These children live in one of the poorest areas of Burundi, where many of their parents live on less than $1 a day. Receiving anything at all for Christmas is truly a special gift for these children. Imagine how joyful they are to receive not only a gift bag with special treats, but a new outfit as well.
During the school year the children received uniforms, school supplies, and a meal each day as part of the program. Without these resources these children would be roaming the streets. In fact, nearly 50% of the children in this rural area have never attended school. Many children are put to work by their parents at a young age. It is extremely difficult to break the vicious cycle of poverty. SHAPE is working to provide these children with a bright future by sharing hope and peace with them.
The children in the program had a meal, candy, and a special treat – a bottle of Coke. Coke is a very rare treat for children living in poverty. If your parents live on less than a $1 a day, naturally that would be considered a luxury.

The children received a meal of rice and beans, which they also receive after school as part of SHAPE’s feeding program.
